Thanks to Mr. Wilber and Dirk for our Wilber Suspension parts!

Finally, the weather has permitted us to take an extended ride on the project bike! It has been a long and frustrating winter working on this bike. I swear I didn't realize it was this messed up.

Our project wing sets up nicely in the front end, no more sagging, the front forks feel much stronger than the old ones, "which by the way were the originals". They feel much stiffer than before but yet no shock, rather smooth on the road, the feeling I got was more like a racing bike but the smoothness of a touring bike. Its amazing how Wilber's springs helped the handling of the bike. when we hit a bump the front end would wobble, not now replacing the fork springs took that issue away.

After the ride I must say I am impressed, not only does the bike handle extremely well in the WV mountains, the nose no longer dives when you apply the brakes. I set the trex forks to different settings during the trip, to check the amount of front end dive and to see how well our CD player works, the CD works best with the trex forks set on 2 but still skips if the bump is large enough.

The front fork dive is almost not there with the forks set on 4, the most fork dive we had on our trip was about 2 inches and that was with the forks set on one. With the original forks the fork dive was about 4 inches with the forks set on 4, the strongest setting.

We have a new set of air shocks on the rear which makes the ride nice, but they are from a famous american company, a company I'm not happy with at all, there customer suport is ZERO unless you have a brand new cycle! I'd like to match up the fork springs with a set from Wilber's, I'll lay odds that wing will handle ever better. We will have to save up our pennies to buy a set of Wilber's shocks, it may well be awhile on those.

I've used famous american brand springs and shocks in the past but I'll purchase Wilber's from now on.

Installation is fairly easy and straight forward and the Wilber's folks provide really easy to follow instructions.

To swap the springs and oil you need to remove the front brakes and wheel, under the lower end of the fork is a 10 mm allen bolt, remove that and drain the old fork oil. Once you replace the 10 mm bolt, remove the cap nuts and lift out the old springs "NOTE the orginal GL1200 springs are in two pieces" Once you get the old springs removed, drop in the new one fill with half quart wilber's racing fork oil and replace the cap nut. To replace the seal you will need to actually remove the front forks, while the front wheel is off there is 3 pinch bolts on each fork, loose them and the forks will pull down out of the triple tree.

August 15, 2007

Its been awhile since I made any entries. I wanted to write a little more about our "Wilbers Suspension". As I am sure you have read on other pages here, we rode the Tail of the Dragon, Deal Gap, NC route US 129, "318 turns in 11 miles," on August 8, 2007.

The best time through the Dragon was 15 minutes and 35 seconds, riding two up with my daughter. The suspension is awesome, I pushed sport bikes through the turns, I pushed Harleys through the turns and passed every bike I came to. I've never rode a bike that handled like this GL1200, one fellow ask me if I was a professional racer, I told im no its all in the bike and the Wilber Suspension.

I can see why Wilbers is the number one susension supplier in Germany. Even my bro Mike who runs progressive fork springs on his 84 GL1200 says he couldn't begin to keep up in the twisty's. He then rode mine and is going to replace his almost new progressive fork springs this winter with a set of Wilbers.

We ran the Dragon with 45 pounds of air in the rear, 10 pounds of air in the front and the Tec forks set on 3.
